The TV that Shows the Future

By Tsunemitsu Toru

It happened on a day his mother went out during the afternoon. When Yuichi got home from school he found an afternoon snack his mother had prepared for him and ate it while reading manga.  He was really getting into in the story when he heard a click behind him. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the TV had turned on by itself.  What, he thought, looking around. No one was there.

He stared in wonder at the TV.   Pictured on the TV was a scene of the Waga family having dinner.

“What the heck is this show?”

Story 9 - tvHe tried changing the channel, but they were all the same.  Yuichi stared at the screen, completely baffled. On TV, the dinner table was set and everyone was eating curry and rice, which was Yuichi’s favorite food, along with a platter of fruit.

His mother asked, “Yuichi, have you finished your homework yet?”

“Just about.  I have three arithmetic problems left,” he answered.

“You still have some left?  Finish them before bath time.”

“Okay, okay.”

Beside him, his father said, “I was told I increased sales at work today.”

“Maybe you’ll get a little raise,” his mother said with a smile on her face.

Suddenly, the door behind his father’s seat slowly opened and a man in black entered.  The man had a blade in his hand.

“Ahhh!”  There was a shriek.

Just then he heard his mother’s voice from the entrance, “I’m home.”

Yuichi looked over his shoulder and heard a switching sound—the TV turned itself off.

“What the heck is going on?” Yuichi said with a bad feeling in his stomach, and went upstairs to his room.  Around seven o’clock, as usual, from downstairs his mother yelled, “Dinner!”.

A platter of fruit and his favorite food, curry and rice, were on the dinner table.

What? This is exactly the same as the dinner scene I just saw on the TV, he thought, digging in to his favorite food, curry and rice.

They ate and his mother started talking, “Yuichi, have you finished your homework yet?”

“Just about.  I have three arithmetic problems left,” he answered.

“You still have some left? Finish them before bath time.”

“Okay, okay,” Yuichi was about to reply, but tilted his head, instead, thinking he’d heard the conversation somewhere before.

When he did that, beside him, his father said, “I was told I increased sales at work today.”

When his mother replied, “Maybe you’ll get a little raise,” with a smile on her face, Yuichi looked at them in surprise.

“Oh no, this seems exactly the same as what I saw on TV.”

At that moment, suddenly the door behind the father’s seat slowly opened and a man in black entered.

**Translator’s notes**

This feels like some old-style horror stories I remember hearing or reading when I was a kid.  The plot device is super simple.
